Epithelioid Cells in Granulomatous Thyroiditis

Epitheliod cells are among the characteristic findings of granulomatous thyroiditis. Generally, the diagnosis of the cell type is not based on one a single cell of the cell type, but on a population of epitheliod cells. Here, we have a collection of epithelioid cells. As you see, some nuclei are round, some are oval and some have a characteristic elongated shape. Note, that the nuclei are larger than the other cell types in these images. For comparison look at the few neutrophils, lymphocytes, and naked nuclei of the follicular thyroid epithelium.
